Identify the broke that returns to the wet end
Coated broke can introduce pigments, binder-related material and a different dissolved or colloidal load. Record the source, repulping conditions, blend range and return timing rather than giving only the total broke percentage. The actual carryover matters when selecting a retention program.
Keep other fibre and filler contributions visible and note grade transitions. A stable test on low-broke furnish does not qualify the same chemical setting for a substantial return increase. Ask which operating conditions the submitted sample represents and what still needs to be covered in the machine trial.
Separate fixation and retention functions
Document the current fixing or coagulation step, starch, sizing, retention polymer and microparticle sequence. Charge-related measurements help interpret response but are not a universal endpoint for addition. A PAM offered to bridge fibres and fines should not be assumed to control every dissolved contaminant alone.
Compare the incumbent and candidates under the real addition and shear sequence. If the supplier proposes a new fixative or changed feed point, identify that as a separate scope. Otherwise a quotation can appear attractive because it omits the extra chemistry needed to make the retention product work.
Measure cleanliness and paper response together
Read total and ash retention, drainage, white-water solids, formation and the relevant grade properties. Include observed deposits, carryover and runnability during production confirmation. A lower turbidity or stronger visible floc does not prove that the broader contamination or cleanliness problem has been solved.
Allow the return loop to reach a comparable state before collecting the accepted data. Track broke input and any unavoidable changes in coating grade or upstream process. Keep adverse observations with the successful points so the commercial decision reflects the full operating balance.
Keep the proposal bounded by broke source and sequence
Send the tested return range, charge context, additive schedule and machine limitation with the RFQ. Request a focused sample set and documents tied to the commercial code. Keep technical support and any system redesign separate from the chemical delivery price unless explicitly included.
Approve the code only for the demonstrated source and control window, with review triggers for meaningful broke or coating changes. Do not convert one successful grade run into a claim that the polymer removes all sticky or dissolved material. Repeated mill evidence, not a broad product label, supports routine supply.
