Separate descriptors from acceptance limits
Cationic charge, molecular profile and solution viscosity help describe a retention polymer, but they do not identify the grade that will work on a particular machine. Ask how each quoted descriptor is measured and whether it is a typical value or a shipment limit. Do not assume identical numbers from different methods mean interchangeable products.
State the proposed commercial code and the function it must provide. Retention, drainage and formation are connected responses, not synonyms. The purchase specification should identify the current machine limitation and the balanced outcome required rather than reward the strongest-sounding charge or viscosity claim.
Attach the furnish and chemistry window
Provide fibre blend, fines, filler source and loading, broke, pH, conductivity, temperature and the mill's charge measurements. Map starch, fixative, sizing and other retention components with their addition points. A supplier cannot reproduce the relevant duty from a clean pulp sample and the words paper grade alone.
Preserve normal and difficult operating periods separately when they behave differently. Identify which conditions the submitted sample represents and what remains untested. An approval obtained during one easy grade run should not silently become a specification for every furnish produced by the mill.
Define a repeatable preparation and shear method
Record active-addition basis, wetting or activation, solution age, dilution, stock consistency and contact time. Reproduce the approach-flow sequence and relevant shear before retention or drainage measurement. A candidate prepared with unusually gentle handling must be checked against what the installed equipment can actually deliver.
Use blank and incumbent references with matched conditions and repeated points where variation matters. Keep first-pass total and ash retention beside drainage, white-water solids and formation. Include the grade-critical paper properties so a higher retained ash value cannot hide unacceptable sheet quality.
Release a tested code rather than a broad label
Ask for current product documents, coded samples, preparation guidance and a bounded machine-trial proposal. Connect the accepted sample to the quotation and production identity. Identify any equipment or chemistry change needed for the result before comparing delivered price.
Specify receiving checks and review triggers for changed furnish, addition point or supplied formulation. A COA supports shipment identity and agreed product limits; it does not replace furnish-specific evidence. Keep the demonstrated machine window and unresolved qualifications with the purchase description so later substitutions receive the appropriate technical review.
Connect qualification to the order
Keep the related operating qualification with the purchase record. Further checks include Papermaking PAM Price: Compare Cost per Tonne of Accepted Paper and Paper Retention CPAM Powder or Emulsion: Compare the Preparation Scope.
Request coded material through the papermaking PAM sample and quotation brief. Include paper grade, furnish, additive sequence, preparation limits, acceptance method, quantity and destination. Separate demonstrated results from conditions still awaiting a trial. For a tissue duty, retain the tissue-specific softness, absorbency and quality gates rather than transferring a filled-paper specification.
